Have you ever been exposed to an advertisement that lured you into a store only to find out the “DEAL” was not the “DEAL?” Somehow there’s always a reason for why the deal is not a good deal and what you REALLY need is this item, model, etc. that has more bells and whistles, and costs more. Find out what the latest Bait and Switch by the FDA is….In 1973 G.D. Searle & Company submitted its first petition to the FDA for the patented product aspartame to be approved. Aspartame was an accidental discovery by James Schlatter, a chemist who had been trying to produce an anti-ulcer pharmaceutical drug for G.D. Searle and Company. When he mixed 40 percent aspartic acid and 50 percent phenylalanine, (two different amino acids) with 10 percent methyl ester, the resulting sweet taste caused the company to change its FDA approval application from drug to food additive and aspartame (NutraSweet and Equal) were born. Keep in mind that when these three ingredients are mixed together they promptly free methyl alcohol (methanol: wood alcohol) which is universally considered a severe poison. This methanol absorbed from aspartame is converted to formaldehyde in the liver. Formaldehyde is a neurotoxin and known carcinogen. It causes retinal damage and birth defects, interferes with DNA replication and can cause squamous-cell carcinomas. Isn’t it amazing that with the stroke of a pen aspartame switched from being a drug to a foodstuff with no alterations in its formula. (bait and switch anyone?)

Despite numerous objections, including one from its own scientists, the company was able to convince the FDA to approve aspartame for commercial use in a few products in 1974. An internal memo released by G.D. Searle & Company urged company executives to work on getting the FDA into the “habit of saying yes” and of encouraging a “subconscious spirit of participation” for approval of the chemical.

In 1976 Senator Ted Kennedy received a letter from the then FDA Commissioner, Alexander Schmidt. In the Health Freedom Alliance website they reveal that in the letter sent to Senator Kennedy, Mr. Schmidt expressed concern over the “questionable integrity of the basic safety data submitted for aspartame safety”. Mr. Schmidt also stated that FDA Chief Counsel Richard Merrill believed that a grand jury should investigate G.D. Searle & Company for lying about the safety of aspartame in its reports and for concealing evidence proving the chemical unsafe for consumption.

Just recently the FDA has allowed another “bait and switch” to occur regarding aspartame. ASPARTAME HAS CHANGED ITS NAME TO AMINOSWEET! People have become aware that aspartame is bad for them so more and more people are avoiding it. To trick the public with a name change that implies a health product that is natural and organic is both criminally devious and also dangerous. Aspartame is a excitotoxin in the brain. It is a dangerous product that can cause significant neurological problems. I consistently advise my clients to avoid any food that has it in it. As a nutritionist I have had to deal with individuals that have had seizures, blindness, neurological brain damage, debilitating migraine headaches, extreme depression and suicidal attempts, anxiety attacks, personality changes, severe insomnia, chest pains, hypertension fibromyalgia, menstrual changes, allergies, kidney stones, simulation of multiple sclerosis, leukemia, and lymphomas, to name just a few side effects, after ingesting the product. This artificial sweetner is putting the public at risk and comes with a big price tag to one’s health.

To assume that aspartame is no longer a health hazard because it has changed its name to aminosweet is a business move to deflect that it is still a poison in the human body. The name has been changed to protect the guilty–bait and switch anyone? I urge each one of you to read food labels. Artificial sweetners and sugar type substances are hazardous to your health.

Air quality is an important factor that can influence our health. Most people are aware of outdoor air pollution. Local T.V. weather reports routinely broadcast air quality levels and warn us to stay indoors if air pollution particulates increase too much. But how safe is staying indoors for you? EPA reports that indoor air is often 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air and chemicals in air fresheners actually increase indoor pollution. So what can you do?Most individuals are not aware that certain chemicals and toxins are actually at a much higher level inside our homes. Dr. Ann C. Steinemann, a professor of civil and environmental engineering and public affairs at the University of Washington researched six popular consumer products: liquid spray air fresheners, plug-in-air fresheners, fabric softeners, laundry detergents, dryer sheets and the kinds of solid disc deodorizers used in toilets. They were found to emit a staggering 100 volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dr. Steinemann said “I didn’t find a brand that didn’t emit at least one toxic chemical.”

The worst part is that fragranced laundry products and air fresheners often emit literally dozens of chemicals–some of which are considered toxic by federal law. Chemicals are replicating the smells we associate with sunshine, a spring rain, a garden bouquet, etc. Sadly there is no law that requires disclosure of all chemicals in fragrances. Steve Gilbert, a toxicologist put it very succinctly: “At the very minimum, we should have a right to know what’s in these products.”

So what can we do to minimize and protect ourselves from home air pollution?

1. Remove your shoes before entering your home. Think of all the places your feet touch and all the items they come in contact with–pesticides on the ground-oil residues on the road/parking lots, chemicals and germs on public bathroom floors.

2. Avoid using air fresheners, fabric softeners and dryer sheets.

3. Go green and change your home cleaners and laundry soap brands.

4. Add specific house plants which help remove toxic chemicals from the air. Formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene are removed by the following plants:

Mass cane, Pot mum, Gerbera daisy, Warnecki, Ficus, English Ivy, Marginata, Mother-in-laws tongue, Peace Lily, Chinese evergreen, Banana, Bamboo Palm, Heart Leaf philodendron, Green Spider Plant, and Janet Craig.

Remember that the most important room in your house is your bedroom so don’t forget to place some plants in it.

5. Avoid using insect poison sprays. Two autoimmune disorders-lupus and rheumatoid arthritis- have already been linked to the use of agricultural pesticides. Dr. Parks and her NIEHS team reviewed a study on 77,000 postmenopausal women which found that women who used insecticides had a higher risk of developing lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. The study also found that women who used the most insecticides were twice as likely to develop the two disorders.

6. Fortify your body with nutritional supplements such as Basic Plus and Kela I.

7. Choose organic foods that have less exposure to environmental pollution from agriculture sprays and insecticides.

8. Don’t forget personal toiletries. Whenever possible purchase fragrance free, colorant free, products such as KelaKare skin care products.

9. Use the real thing- cut open a lemon or orange, gather some mint leaves, or just open a box of baking soda to refresh the air.

Consider using an air surface sanitizer such as the EdenPure which uses 4 distinct mechanisms to attack and destroy indoor air pollution that has lodged in the walls, ceilings, floors, carpets, and furniture. This is very beneficial if you suffer from respiratory illness such as asthma, allergies, second hand smoke, pet dander, mold and yeast.

Bowel dysfunction is a normal and expected side effect of abdominal surgery with cancer, gastric, colon, small bowel, pancreatic and liver surgeries. However it is one of the most difficult part of recovery from these types of surgeries. The problem can last as long as three to five days in patients. Patients who spent time rocking in a rocking chair resumed bowel activity more quickly than patients who did not, which meant they felt better sooner and recovered faster. Rocking chair therapy has been used for easing lower back pain, constipation, arthritis, C-sections and abdominal hysterectomy pain.

Dr. Robert Massey, PhD RN, director of clinical nursing at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas conducted a study that involved 66 patients, 34 of whom were instructed to rock in a rocking chair for periods of between 10 to 20 minutes for a total of at least one hour a day, and to walk, adding more time each day as tolerated. They were compared with 32 others who walked but did not rock in a rocking chair.

The results: Those in the rocking group first passed gas which is a post-op healing benchmark, 16.8 hours earlier than the other group. Dr. Massey said that 16.8 hours doesn’t sound like a lot but it is a long time if you are experiencing postoperative nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention and inability to eat. There is also evidence that these typical side effects from surgery may impact recovery in a way that can negatively affect your quality of life much later– so rocking chair therapy may have long-term health benefits as well.

Rocking in a rocking chair does use some abdominal muscles, but Dr. Massey’s patients said it did not seem to increase abdominal pain. Dr. Massey believe the positive results from rocking are due to stimulation of the vestibular nerves in the ear, which in turn, send signals to the reticular activating system (RAS), which is the source of the fight-or-flight reaction that plays a pivotal role in bodily and behavioral alertness. Bowel dysfunction associated with abdominal surgery is thought to be a response to the stress of surgery. Rocking modulates this response and mobilizes the digestive system.

Some orthopedic surgeons recommend rocking to help patients recover from knee surgery. It seems to also help Alzheimer, dementia, ADHD, autism and sensory disorders in patients. Rocking has also been used for chronic fatigue, stroke and heart attack victims. It has been found helpful for varicose veins. Dr. Massey is planning to investigate whether the use of rocking therapy will help surgical patients avoid post-op- deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a potentially serious and sometimes lethal situation that creates clots that can go to the lungs. Dr. Massey thinks the rocking that involves flexing and relaxing muscles in the lower legs, may enhance compression stockings effectiveness.

Rocking can be helpful for everyday complaints such as the common cold, insomnia and some forms of constipation, although Dr. Massey feels that there is a need for further research to learn more. He believes that patients will be seeing lots more rocking chairs in high-tech medical centers in the future.

Note: I grew up with rocking chairs. They were an important part of my life. My Grandparents each had individual rocking chairs that they relaxed in after a days work. We had a rocking chair in the kitchen that invited individuals to sit and rock as they waited for meals to cook, or visitors to “visit” while we worked in the kitchen. Rocking was an essential part of my life as a parent and as a grandparent. I rocked as I nursed my children, soothed them to sleep, comforted a hurt, read books together, or discussed a school project. I love to rock as I watch sun rises and sun sets. It helps me unwind after 16 hour work days. It’s always nice to know that from childhood into my senior years, I have consistently done something “healthy” so ROCK ON and enjoy the benefits.

As a nutritionist I am frequently asked “what should I eat and what shouldn’t I eat?” My answer seems to always surprise those individuals who ask the question. My answer is “eat REAL food as close to its natural state as possible, and eat a wide variety of protein (meat and dairy), carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legume), and just a little fat, and avoid as much as possible man-made, artificial, highly processed, packaged convenience food, and fried food.

Balance and prevention are the keys to health and should be the guideline for diets. The body requires six basic nutritional elements to flourish and stay healthy. They are protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fat, and water. These six elements need to be provided to the body in a balanced and healthy way for optimal health.

When food is cooked, processed, refined, or adulterated, the nutritional content of the food can be destroyed, lessened, or become difficult for the body to fully use (as in the case of synthetic ingredients). When any one of the six elements of nutrition is absent from the diet, there can not be balanced health and eventually the body pays the price disguised as sickness, disease, illness. Independent research has proven that even when the six elements of nutrition are provided in the diet, there still needs to be supplementation of a multiple vitamin/mineral like Basic Plus, because not all foods are nutritionally dense due to mineral depletion in our agriculture soils and growing practices.

Dr. Steven Bratman was the first to put a name to an obsession with healthy eating. He called it orthorexia nervosa. Orthorexics are individuals preoccupied with eating healthy food and avoiding anything artificial or “toxic”. They are fanatical about eating the purest, healthiest, most nutritious ( they call “clean”) foods available. In their quest to eat healthy, Orthorexics begin to eliminate basic food groups needed by the body to sustain health. John Stossel did a segment on 20-20 (ABC) interviewing Orthorexics and the extreme health practices they practice such as only eating organic food, eating only raw food, eliminating all meat and dairy, eliminating fruits and vegetables that have too high of a sugar content or calorie count, fear of purchasing fruits and vegetables in grocery stores because they can be toxic or poisonous, inability to eat outside of their homes because they can’t trust food to be “clean”, etc.

This obsession with pure food can lead to distorted views and behaviors that border on eating disorders. Nutritional extremes practiced by Orthorexics can mean restricting social activities, become hermits obsessed with meal preparations that consume long periods of time, sacrifices and extreme inconveniences. The mantra of “you become what you consume” instead of inspiring becomes a fear of what is in their food, and can lead to a very unbalanced lifestyle.

Balance and prevention are the real issues for a sustaining diet and health. An overly restrictive diet can lead to nutrient deficiencies and can adversely affect health, energy and emotional well being. Determining what constitutes balance and prevention is a personal choice that should be based on sound nutritional ground. Eating food as close to its origin helps insure maximum nutrient content. When food is cooked or processed nutrient content is affected. However, this does not mean one should eat only raw food. For example, Broccoli actually releases more of its nutrient content when lightly steamed than when eaten raw. Expanding ones’ taste buds to include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that can be incorporated into the diet helps insure needed vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Eating small servings of a variety of meat, fish, dairy and eggs, provide an array of amino acids, vitamins and minerals. The key once again is to eat food as close to its natural state, eat a variety of food, avoid as much as possible man-made synthetic food, highly processed and refined food, artificial, chemically flavored, colored, manufactured food, deserts and high density empty calorie foods. Avoid stimulants, soft drinks, highly sweetened foods, artificial sweetners, MSG flavored enhanced foods, and hormone additive foods.

Choosing real food, as close to Nature as possible, whenever possible, and expanding your food selections can lead to a healthy diet that is nutritionally balanced and overall preventative against disease. Any behavior–can become obsessive-compulsive and dysfunctional if it takes over your life or is taken to an extreme. It is tricky when people enthusiastically defend and preach no meat, no grains, no dairy, only organic, only raw, only what God made in a rigid all-or-nothing rules to live by.

What people choose to eat is often so sacred to them that it makes it difficult to nutritionally educate or prevent them moving into dangerous territory. Obviously, respecting certain religious food observances should always be considered as well as medically prescribed diets for specific health needs when planning a balanced, preventive disease diet. Moderation, and a lifestyle that is balanced with food plans that can be enjoyed and love, with appropriate nutritional supplementation, is a healthy goal to aim for.

Proactive vs. Reactive

Every day our body is bombarded with germs , viruses, and bacteria. Cold and flu season and allergies can place additional stress on the Immune System, requiring it to work overtime to provide protection. “Immune-boosting” is a term often used to suggest individuals take a product to initiate a surge of protection against an invading sickness. Oft times this is in response to an unusual situation or a once-in-a-while situation and not a daily occurring event. In this scenario, individuals are “reacting” to a situation in which they feel their immunity might be threatened which could then lead to sickness or a disease, such as exposure to someone who is already sick, or entering an enclosed environment that can circulate an unhealthy environment such as in an airplane, commuter transportation, hospital,or dense personal contact such as in schools and corporate portable cubicles for high density office space.

Immune boosting products should only be used for a short term because they can produce unwanted side effects or damage the body if taken too long. They work by temporarily stimulating the immune system. In the long haul having an over-or under-stimulated immune system can be an invitation for illness and irritation. The extra stimulation can stress the body even further using up valuable nutritional levels that leave the body under protected.

For individuals who suffer from seasonal allergies or those with certain autoimmune disorders, immune boosters may exacerbate their conditions by further stimulating their already over-stimulated system. The ideal condition for the immune system is to be at a balanced, resting stage where it can best react to the body’s signals. The immune system doesn’t always need to be boosted; it needs to be nourished and balanced.

Balancing the immune system via daily proactive measures makes the most sense in one’s health program. It is possible that one part of the body may need an increased immune response, while simultaneously, another may need a suppressed response. When given complete nutritional support, the body’s own intelligence is able to direct the immune system to adapt to the ever changing needs of the body without compromising one’s health. Helping to build and support a better immune system is the smartest way to prepare the immune system for whatever challenge it may face, whether it be high amounts of stress, a nasty virus, bacteria invasion, or increased pollution.

A proactive lifestyle will bring individuals to the realization that during the usual cold and flu-devoid spring and summer months, one should not take the immune system for granted and only give it attention during cold and flu season. Emerging flu strains are a threat every month of the year–not just during the fall and winter–and depending on the climate and location, allergen levels can be elevated throughout the entire year as evidenced in the Southern States of the United States. Consistent immune support is part of a healthy proactive lifestyle versus temporary short term reactive response products.

Daily use of Basic Plus and Kela I can be incorporated into a daily proactive lifestyle. Not only do these products provide vitamins and minerals that the body needs on a daily basis, they also provide additional protection from the stresses and environmental pollution that are ever present in our modern society. Free radical damage is a daily on-going process in the body. Without sufficient nutrition the body is left without the coping, healing, and regenerating resources it requires for complete immune protection. Using Basic Plus and Kela I are a strong foundation for a proactive, healthy lifestyle on a continuing year round program.

Nature requires that chelated minerals be made in only one fashion if they are to be utilized (bio-available) by the body. Although there are many ways to make chelated minerals, nature requires that they be made in only one fashion IF THEY ARE TO BE UTILIZED BY THE BODY.

1. The mineral must be chelated with amino acids

2. The chelation process must utilize acids, bases, and enzymes in order to be compatible with the body

3. The molecular weight of the finished amino acid chelated mineral must be less than 1000 in order for it to permeate the membranes of the intestinal cells. A larger chelate cannot be absorbed without further digestion and reconfigeration.

4. The chelated must be built as the body would build it. It cannot be constructed in a different manner if one expects it to be absorbed.

5. The stability of the chelate after being formed must be maintained through buffering over the isoelectric point of the amino acids.

Mother Nature established these criteria, not LifeZone. LifeZone only uses amino acid chelated minerals that are proven and capable of meeting these criteria.

Just because a mineral is “labeled” a chelate does not guarantee that it will be absorbed. When we swallow “chelates” that don’t conform to these requirements, they are rejected by the body.

Research has shown that amino acid chelated minerals are so important to our health and well-being that many manufactures of mineral supplements have rushed to the marketplace with their own brands of labeled chelated minerals WITHOUT doing any research to determine whether or not their methods of chelation will actually enhace the absorption of the mineral. Their only objective in producing a “suposedly” chelated mineral is the little extra profit they expect from calling their product a chelate.

Consider the following: In a University experiment using manganese it was demonstrated that when it had been properly chelated with amino acids, it was absorbed 300 percent better than the best form of inorganic manganese tested. A second chelated manganese made using a different process from what Nature dictates, was only twice as effective as manganese in its inorganic form. The only difference in the two chelated manganese products was the way they were made. Chemical analysis revealed that the ingredients were exactly the same. Thus it can be said “NOT ALL CHELATES ARE CREATED EQUAL!”

LifeZone uses amino acid chelated minerals that have US patents guaranteeing greater absorption of the mineral by their manufacturer. No other company even claims that its chelates are absorbed except our manufacturer.

If you are using a product that isn’t a true amino acid chelate, as indicated on the label with the citation of patent numbers or reference to Albion as the mineral supplier, then you are essentially paying a premium for fancy inorganic minerals. Without guaranteed availability, you lose two ways: cost and mineral utilization.

Why Do We Need To Take Mineral Supplements?

A four year study conducted by Rutgers University involving laboratory assay tests on over 4,00 vegetable samples from across the United States produced some alarming results…

“There is a serious mineral absence developing in the soils of the United States. The foods that we eat are our body’s source of minerals. Unfortunately, however, our food often contains inadequate quantities of the essential minerals to meet all of our bodies mineral requirements. For example, to obtain a sufficient amount of Iron as established by the U.S. Government, we would need to eat three pounds of liver or 493 cups of spinach each day”.

…Rutgers University

In short, we are not products of what we eat, rather what we eat and absorb through our intestines.

Amino acid chelated minerals have been shown to be more bioavailable than other forms of minerals. For instance:

Calcium Amino Acid Chelated mineral is 60-80% better absorbed than Calcium salts and 60% better absorbed than calcium in milk.

Zinc Amino Acid Chelated mineral is shown to be 300% more bioavailable than Zinc salts and 200% more bioavailable than Zinc Picolinate

Manganese Amino Acid Chelated mineral is up to 250% more bioavailable to the body than non-patented amino acid chelates.

Data available for amino acid chelated Chromium, Copper, Magnesium, and Iron show from 300-500% greater bioavailability.

Iron Amino Acid Chelated mineral has been found to increase Hemoglobin levels in the blood. It is 3.8 times better absorbed than Iron Sulfate and 3.6 times better absorbed than Iron Oxide, without the intestinal distress and constipation that usually accompanies iron supplementation.

Copper amino Acid Chelated mineral has an intestinal uptake over three times better than Copper Oxide, almost four times better than Copper Sulfate and almost six times better than Copper Carbonate.

Just because a label may list a percentage of Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA), doesn’t necessarily indicate that the body is able to absorb anywhere near that percentage. The body has to change these minerals to forms it can use. This takes time, and in the process most of the actual minerals are eliminated from the body. A true Amino Acid Chelated mineral is actually smuggled into your body through the intestinal walls and bypasses all of the digestive, metabolic problems associated with mineral metabolism. You utilize more minerals because they are already in a form that can be redily used by your body and not have to be changed before being used. Therefore, with LifeZone, you get more use of your minerals for your money.

The absorption of minerals and vitamins is the key to many health implications, like Aging, Arthritis, Diabeties, Heart attacks, Anemia, Cholesterol levels, and metabolism, just to name a few. I would like to mention the impact on energy and fatigue that is directly affected by the nutritionally essential minerals and their ability to form amino acid chelates with organic molecules.

Regarding energy, a number of studies in the relation of energy and the absorption of minerals have been done. One such study took 24 rats, which were divided into three groups of eight rats each. The first group was designated as “control” and received no mineral supplementation. The second group received inorganic minerals for three days. The third group received the same amount of minerals for three days as the second group, but insted were fed true amino acid chelated minerals, not the inorganic minerals. All three groups of rats were placed in water and allowed to swim until exhausted. Upon exhaustion, the rats were taken out of the water and their swimming time recorded. The “control” group swam 10.1 minutes. The inorganic fed rats swam for 13.8 minutes, but the group of rats fed true amino acid chelated minerals swam for 48.3 minutes without stopping!

This demonstrates the difference bioavilability makes in energy, stamina, endurance and in overcoming stress.

Simply stated, LifeZone nutritional products are in a class of their own. isn’t it time for you to “LIVE THE DIFFERENCE?”
